Climbing Hidden North Wales – Moel Famau
Here is our next pick for hidden beauties to climb scattered around North Wales…
Moel Famau
The next on our list of hidden beauties is the collection of hills called The Clwydian Range, the peak known as Moel Famau. The hill, since 1985, has been classed as an “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” and reaching an elevation of 1,821 ft, so you can only imagine what the view would be like up there!
- THE EASY ROUTE
Start from the Southern car parks within Bwlch Penbarras between Moel Famau and Moel Fenlli which is about 1.25 miles from the summit.
- THE HARD ROUTE
Known as The Northern Route, start from the Iron-Age hill fort at Moel Arthur.
- EVEN HARDER ROUTE
Start at the village of Cilcain and take the footpath to the top of Moel Famau, there should be plenty of signs along the way to guide you through the beautiful landscape.
While You’re There…
Visit The Jubilee Tower.
This was built to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of George III in 1810, however, due to lack of funds it was never completed, but none of that matters as a giant storm brought the incomplete tower down in 1862 anyway. It never got much glory time but there’s plenty of history to it. The tower was originally designed by Thomas Harrison of Chester. His plan was to emulate the design from an Egyptian Obelisk with 3 tiers. So why spend thousands on a holiday to Cairo when Egypt is practically next door?
