Climbing Hidden North Wales – Hiraethog

Climbing in the UK can be limited, but when people do decide to hike in this beautiful country, peaks such as Snowdonia and Ben Nevis hog all of the attention. North Wales is home to some of the most encapsulating picturesque viewpoints this country has to offer…but no one knows about most of them.

This is my first blog of several showcasing some of North Wales’ hidden hikes that are just as breath-taking as they are unknown.

The Hiraethog Way

This beautiful stroll links the quaint villages of Pentrefoelas, Cerrigydrudion, Llanfihangel Glyn Myfr and Llanrhaeadr all together with footpaths, country roads and peaceful lanes. Hiraethog, ‘The Hills of the Longing’ is the heart of Wales. The unspoiled land is cluttered with thick forests, red squirrels, soothing lakes and villages that’ll soon grow on you through their warm hospitality and friendly townsfolk.

The Short Route

Follow the Alwen Trail which included six interpretation panels explaining the local history.

The Long Route

The “Around The Lake” trail at Llyn Brenig is 9.5 miles longer but guides you through a journey of breath-taking countryside.

Where should I stay around Hiraethog?

The Maenan Abbey Hotel

2.9 miles away from Eglwys-FÂCH lies a truly beautiful place to end and start the day in. The Maenan features a magnificent galleried Victorian staircase and a blazing winter log fire, holding fourteen bedrooms all with an en suite.  With the hotel being pet-friendly, having free Wi-Fi and parking with its own restaurant and bar, you’re completely able to finish the day streaming Coronation Street in bed after plenty of exercise walking the dog around Hiraethog.

The Groes Inn

2.7 miles away from Eglwys-FÂCH is a cosy, unforgettable inn that’s been welcoming visitors for over 400 years!  Not only will you receive world-class service but you’ll be dining in an award-winning restaurant with breakfast included. It’s pet-friendly, has free parking and full facilities for disabled guests. Plus, a 6 ft 5 length bed to accommodate for their larger visitors.
