Isle of Anglesey

Anglesey, also known as Ynys Môn, is the largest island in Wales and the fifth largest around the UK! We’ve got around 70,000 people living here, and there are two bridges connecting us to the rest of the country.

Historically, Anglesey is known for being THE place for druids, before being taken over by the Romans, who knew the island as Mona. When the Romans left Britain, pirates from Ireland came over, until a Scottish warlord came to get rid of them. Next came the vikings, then the Saxons and Normans, before finally the English got a hold of us.

Lots of areas on the island is used to intensively rear sheep and cattle, but we also have some wetland sites. You can also find bittern, skylarks, auks and red squirrels, depending on whereabouts you look.

Pretty much the whole of the coastline is an Area of Outstanding National Beauty, and you can often see harbour porpoises in the area.

What else can you do in Anglesey? Thanks to the extensive coastline, watersports are popular – why not try out wind surfing, jet skiing, angling or sailing?

Bonus fact: Dawn French was born here!
