Romantic Breaks In North Wales

Stuck on what to do this Valentine’s Day?

We’ve got a pick of some of the best accommodation, activities and restaurants for a magical day or weekend away.

You can thank us later!

A Day Out

If you’re in the area, Portmeirion is quite possibly Wales’ most picturesque town.
With its pastel-coloured architecture, huge woodland gardens and historic cottages, Portmeirion isn’t lacking for romance. Treat yourself and visit the Portmeirion Mermaid Spa, get a bottle of Penderyn Red Flag Malt Whisky, pick up some Portmeirion Pottery, or simply enjoy the atmosphere – you might never want to leave.

Valle Crucis Abbey might be the most romantic church on the North Wales mainland, owing largely to its remote location. One of the best preserved abbeys in Wales, the Cistercian monks’ fishpond is still in use. Make the most of your time in the area by heading downstream and getting something to eat at The Corn Mill , and even stay the night at the boutique Manorhaus!

Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfall is for the romantic nature-lovers. The highest waterfall in Wales is surrounded by peaceful woodlands, and a stroll along the winding path from bottom to top is just the kind of romantic excursion that invites proposals. Relax after your walk at the rustic Tan-y-Pistyll Cafe.

A Romantic Dinner

A traditional Welsh love spoon

Grosvenor Pulford Hotel and Spa are complimenting their three-course Valentine’s meal with musical entertainment, in the form of swing and rat pack classics. The speciality is fresh fish, although there are many meat and vegetarian options to choose from. See what’s on offer.

Ruthin Castle are presenting a medieval five course banquet with live entertainment, including a goblet of mead and a glass of wine with the banquet – you’ll even receive a traditional Welsh love spoon!

If you or your partner are vegan or vegetarian, the Voltaire vegan restaurant in Bangor will be perfection! Healthy and delicious modern vegan food (highly rated) topped off with two special desserts, a Valentine’s-themed sharing cocktail and a wide selection of vegan-friendly wines, beers and spirits.

A Night To Remember

For the literary couple, nothing will get hearts racing faster than the incredible Gladstone’s Library.
With a number of boutique-style bedrooms to choose from (many en-suite) and breakfast bistro, undoubtedly its main draw will be the extensive library that’s open to guests after hours. There are also a number of lovely restaurants nearby, including the Shared Olive and The Glynne Arms, depending on your taste.
If your idea of a romantic getaway involves snuggling up together with a good book, you’ll love Gladstone’s.

Pentre Mawr Country House might look like a stuffy country house from the outside, but inside you’ll find something truly special.
Inspired by the owners’ trips to Africa, the Country House offers a truly luxurious glamping experience. The luxury lodges, fitted out like an African king’s bedroom, have their own private hot tubs and terraces.
If you’d rather something a little more indoors they also offer a number of cottage rooms with private hot tubs.

We’d recommend the Brookhouse Mill for all off-site eating requirements!

Empire Hotel & Spa is a large, luxurious and traditional hotel with full spa and gym access, this is the place to go if you want to relax. With an indoor heated salt water pool, two restaurants and rooms with excellent views, it’s a safe winner, and even has budget options for when you’re feeling the pinch!

Hint: the Empire Hotel is perilously close to both the Great Orme Tramway and Llandudno Ski and Snowboard Centre.
